Vox Hunt: Writing - My Favorite Writers

Show us your favorite writer.

it's pretty much impossible to pick just one.
and then there are all the different genres to consider!
so from left to right we have e.e. cummings, my favorite poet, isaac asimov, my favorite science fiction writer and j.k. rowling my favorite fantasy writer.
i picked these three from the huge amount of writers i adore because i can read any of their works over and over and over again. i just wish i had the time to!

ironically enough reading is what has been keeping me from voxing. i'm taking 5 classes all of which are writing (and therefore reading) intensive. i've been averaging about 300-400 pages of assigned reading a week. add that to football season and i pretty much have no time for anything else. i'm sorry and i'll try to get better about updating. i miss you all! <3

what i love [about college]

curtis did this last year and it turned out really well so i'm going to follow in his footsteps. an entry for every day of the week until graduation.

so to start it off, all the things i've loved about college.

*Blacksburg: at first I was a little afraid I wouldn't be able to get used to the small town atmosphere here, but I have learned to love it. being able to walk everywhere is wonderful, not to mention all the great independent stores and restaurants (Gillies, Bollo's, HomeBody etc.).

*New People: at a school of 27,000 undergrads it's almost impossible to not meet new people. and it's really fun when you meet awesome and fun new people.

*Summer 2006: last summer I stayed here to be a summer school RA and take some classes to ensure I could graduate on time. I was sort of uncertain that it would be fun at all but it was probably one of the best experiences I've ever had. I met two of my favorite girls ever and had fun running around a nearly deserted Blacksburg.

*Vintage Cellar: with free wine and beer tasting on the weekends and amazing closeouts vintage cellar has quickly become a favorite place since my 21st birthday. most of the people who work there are very knowledgeable about the wines and I always walk out of there with a great wine.

*Limits: college is where you learn your limits, not just your limits for alcohol consumption but also your personal limits. I've learned a lot about myself and about how much I'm willing to put up with from other people. I've learned how to stand up for myself and how to pick my battles.

*Hokie Football: I was in marching band all four years of high school and when i got to college i couldn't tell you what a down was. not only did I learn a lot about football, I also got this amazing sense of what it means to be a Hokie. going to football games as a freshman was almost magical, being in such a huge stadium packed full of roaring fans is exhilarating. and the best part is the fun doesn't stop; I never want to stop going to games here at Lane.

*Marching Virginians: although I was only in it for one year it was a great experience. I had a blast dancing the Hokie Poke on the field and screaming at the opposing team when they got too close to our seats. what else lets you shake your butt at a packed stadium?

*Inspired Teachers: nothing is better than being excited to go to class. I've had some amazing teachers who have taught me how to think critically about society and things that I routinely take for granted. learning has been fun for the most part.

*Going to school in a castle: Tech looks like a castle, as one of my teachers told me "if Radford ever attacked us, they'd be screwed." we have archers windows and gargoyles! it's pretty fun to walk across the drillfield on a misty morning towards Burruss...i feel like I'm at Hogwarts (especially if there is music playing from Burruss.)

*No sleep schedule to speak of: it's totally fine if you stay up all night and take a five hour nap during the day when you're in college. No one even bats an eye, actually people think you're weird if you go to sleep before midnight and wake up before noon.

*No dresscode: I love wearing sweatpants and t-shirts. I only have to dress up like once a month for interviews or meetings. it's lovely.

breakdown.

we're still awaiting the announcement of the full list of all those who were killed and wounded. but i have found out already that two of my friends were victims in the shooting here at Virginia Tech.

my good friend ryan was an RA in WAJ. he was one of the first victims.
he was amazing, smart and hilarious. his smile was amazing and his laugh could capture entire rooms. i was just hanging out with him this past Saturday. i still can't believe he's really gone.

also, one of the girls on my staff, caitlin, was a victim as well. she was one of the sweetest, kindest people i know. i wish i could say more but the words are just escaping me right now. all i want to get across really is that these two people were amazing, brilliant and had so much life in them it is hard to understand why they were taken.

like a lot of people here i'm still trying to process everything that's going on. i am so sad that these two amazing people were taken. and my heart aches because i know that there are thirty other families who have lost wonderful sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and parents.
please pray for virginia tech, everyone here and everyone who has been affected by this tragedy.

happenings

so i sucked it up and submitted my application to grad school yesterday. if i get accepted and then if i find the money i'll be going to catholic university of america and studying to get a Masters of Arts in Moral Theology and Ethics. so we'll see about all that.

i've been sleeping a lot lately and i can feel the little hints of depression creeping into the edges of my mind. part of it's seasonal i know, but i think it's worse this year for a plethora of reasons. i need to start working out and going to yoga, it's always helped in the past. isn't it funny how you put off working out because of all the effort that needs to be put in to get around to doing it, but when you finally do it you feel amazing. silly.

oh! i also started eating cheese again. like a lot. like i killed a wedge of brie in 2 days by myself, the same goes for a box of cheez-its but those don't really really count as actual cheese. i felt like crap the first couple of days (awesome stomach pains alternating with queasiness) but i think i'm back on a fairly even keel. i'm going to try and be reasonable and avoid super processed "cheese" and try to stick to snobby cheese haha. i've been thinking about how i eat for a while and i don't think that cutting everything out is such a healthy choice. also i saw this quote that james posted on his twitter and it kind of reinforced that little kernel of "maybe this isn't such a rational idea":

so i'm going to try and keep that in mind as i try to recreate a healthy diet for myself.

new rainboots!

other news includes getting new cutie rainboots from target today because my old pink ones broke :(
as well as going through my obscenely large folder of photos of myself and deleting a lot. it's kind of strange looking how i've changed over the past fourish years (i think that's how long i've had my camera). anyway, i have officially decided that i miss being a redhead but that i definitely like my hair better when it's a dark near black color. argh! the need to change my hair itch is coming back with a vengeance. i mean i haven't changed my hair in like....MONTHS. after a steady diet of new hair every month or two it's hard to cope with. also my regular hair color is blah.

god. i'm such a brat. and i feel like a super bum because all i did today was watch law and order and not fold my laundry. haha.

ok before i end, anne hamby fiiiinally gave me some super awesome pictures including funtimes had at the Wave over winter break as well as some other quality photos. i'm only going to post a couple of the bestest ones.

it depends on whether i want to feel the sadness for a bit or if i want to cheer myself up.

if i feel like feeling sad i listen to casiotone for the painfully alone's song called "we have mice"
it's pretty much the perfect lonely time song.

if i feel like being cheered up lately i've been listening to teddybears (formerly teddybears STHLM)

i hate winter and want it to be over.
i particularly hate it when the retainer in my septum gets cold and then i have a rather unpleasant tingling sensation in the end of my nose until i can warm up.

all wrong

i need to get motivated to move forward. everything around me seems half baked; as if i can't face actually finishing things because that will move me closer to graduation and closer to real life and closer to the fact that i have finished college and that's as far as i've gotten. i know it won't be the end of the world if i take some time off but i'm terrified of getting stuck. what if i just stay on permanent vacation, working at starbucks living in va beach for the rest of my life?! geh. i would hate myself.
i can't even bring myself to write. which is bad because i'm in a poetry class this semester with nikki giovanni. so i mean, no pressure or anything.

Shopgirl

i've been on kind of a reading kick. i just read shopgirl by steve martin. it was pretty good. very sweet and a quick read. i think it's one of those books that you have to read a few times to get everything out of it. but basically i'd recommend it if you want something short and fun.

only like 30 pages in. it's weird. lately i've been really into reading and watching things that i know are going to scare the crap out of me. like i keep seeing previews for hannibal rising and i know that movie will give me nightmares but i still have this inexplicable urge to go see it.
i've actually already started an even scarier book but have kind of stalled out on it because it's not really small enough to carry around with me to read before class and such. i found out about it from curtis while i was at home over break. i had to have barnes&noble order it because it just looks amazing. all the typography and color and and pretty much i can just geek out about how it looks. then i started reading it and realized that this was probably going to be one of my most favorite books ever. you
